The Unforgivable Sin

on November 9, 2015

Someone brought up the unforgivable sin on my personal facebook page in response to my last post which got me thinking.  For anybody who is worried about this here is my response.

Ah yes, the unforgivable sin. Anybody who has accepted Jesus as Lord of their lives and is filled with the spirit has nothing to fear from this teaching. In Matthew 12: 31-32 it says:

“And I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come “

Jesus was talking to the Pharisees who had personally witnessed Jesus perform miracles  and were wilfully denying the power they had seen. Nobody who believes in Jesus and is filled with the Spirit has denied the Holy Spirit or His power, This is a warning to those people who have seen the power of the Holy Spirit and have turned away from His call. The punishment is quite clear for that – it’s eternity in Hell.  If you turn away from the calling for conviction of the Holy Spirit that’s what happens.  If anybody who is a Christian does fear this, read 1 John 4 :18 18:

“There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.”

Good news

Just to clarify for anybody who is confused on this: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” When we know how mighty and powerful God is, we should fear him.  He as the creator has the right to judge us and punish us.  We then understand we have nothing to fear as Christians because that Mighty Powerful God is on our side and he sent his Son to die to pay for our sins. This is the GOOD NEWS.

The idea that helped me understand this daunting area is this: A sin is unforgivable when you won’t ask God to forgive it. All sins can be forgiven but if a person has truly known God, known his Spirit, known the truth of how God is…and turns away, rejecting all that and all that they have known, what else is left?

That person cannot be forgiven for there is nothing left to convince them of God being real. They have tasted all that can be tasted in this life and rejected it. Therefore, they make themselves unforgivable.
